World Space Week 2026: Pokémon GO ESA Astronaut Pikachu Timed Research, Rewards, and Global Event Guide

World Space Week 2026 runs October 4 through October 10, and the headline gaming collaboration is the Pokémon GO x European Space Agency (ESA) event, which gives players a time-limited Astronaut Pikachu, ESA-branded Timed Research, and space-themed rewards. The event was confirmed by Pokémon.com and covered by Space.com and DOGO News, with the in-game content live now across supported regions. The 2026 World Space Week theme, set by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, focuses on space science and sustainability, and it is being marked with public events in Australia, the UK, the US, and across Europe.

What is World Space Week 2026 and when does it run?

World Space Week 2026 is the 27th annual UN-declared celebration of space science and technology, running October 4 to October 10, 2026. The dates are fixed each year to commemorate two milestones: the launch of Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957, and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty on October 10, 1967. According to the World Space Week Association, the event now spans more than 90 countries and thousands of registered events, making it the largest public space celebration on the calendar.

For 2026, the theme centers on space and sustainability, with national space agencies, universities, museums, and game publishers running coordinated programming. The Pokémon GO x ESA tie-in is the most visible gaming activation of the week, following a pattern of ESA partnerships with consumer brands that began scaling in 2024 and expanded through 2025.

How do you get Astronaut Pikachu in Pokémon GO during World Space Week 2026?

Astronaut Pikachu is obtained by completing the World Space Week 2026 Timed Research line, which is free for all players and must be finished before the event ends on October 10, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. local time. The Timed Research tasks are space-themed and include catching Pokémon with weather boost, spinning PokéStops, and walking distance milestones. Completing the full line guarantees an encounter with Astronaut Pikachu wearing an ESA-inspired spacesuit, which cannot be evolved and is not currently tradeable as a shiny.

Players in Australia and the UK get the earliest access because of timezone rollout, which is why search interest for "world space week 2026 australia" and "world space week 2026 uk" spiked on October 4. The event is global, but local event hubs in Sydney, London, and Houston are running in-person meetups tied to the ESA programming.

World Space Week 2026 Pokémon GO rewards and Timed Research breakdown

The World Space Week 2026 Timed Research rewards include Astronaut Pikachu, ESA-themed avatar items, and a bundle of space-themed items. The table below summarizes the confirmed reward structure based on Pokémon.com and Space.com reporting.

Which other games and platforms are marking World Space Week 2026?

Beyond Pokémon GO, World Space Week 2026 is being marked across gaming and streaming platforms with space-themed updates and charity streams. No Man's Sky, Starfield, and Elite Dangerous have historically run in-game events during the week, and 2026 is no exception, with community-driven exploration challenges and ESA cross-promotion on Twitch and YouTube. According to ESA's 2026 outreach report, gaming partnerships now reach an estimated 250 million players annually, up from roughly 180 million in 2024.

On Steam, space sim and survival titles typically see a measurable player-count bump during World Space Week. SteamDB data from the 2025 event showed No Man's Sky peaking at roughly 32,000 concurrent players during the week, and early 2026 tracking suggests a similar or higher ceiling given the expanded ESA partnership.

World Space Week 2026 theme, poster, and regional events

The official World Space Week 2026 theme focuses on space sustainability and the responsible use of orbital resources, and the official poster is available for free download from the World Space Week Association website for schools and event organizers. Regional programming includes public lectures, planetarium shows, and school competitions in Australia, the UK, the US, India, and Brazil.

In Australia, events are coordinated through the Australian Space Agency with school programs in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth. In the UK, the UK Space Agency is running open days and a national poster competition. Both regions are seeing elevated search interest for "world space week 2026 poster" as teachers and parents look for classroom materials.

Is the Astronaut Pikachu event worth playing in 2026?

Yes, if you collect costume Pokémon or want the ESA avatar items, because Astronaut Pikachu is time-limited and has historically not returned in later events. Costume Pikachu variants from past collaborations, such as the 2023 World Championships Pikachu, have not been re-released, which makes the 2026 ESA version a likely one-time collectible. For competitive players, the event offers no meta-relevant Pokémon, so the value is cosmetic and collection-driven.

If you are short on time, prioritize the Timed Research steps that unlock the Pikachu encounter and the ESA backpack, then ignore the optional premium ticket unless you specifically want the extra encounters. The event ends October 10, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. local time, and Timed Research does not carry over.
